Legislative elections 2024: 64, 62 or 60 years old… What about pensions?

Jordan Bardella was clear on pensions during the presentation of the National Rally program: he now focuses on long careers. He will then see if he reaches the age limits for the others, that is to say 62 or 60 years old.

The long career concerns those who started working before the age of 20. The RN suggests that someone who started their career early can stop at 60 years of age if he has paid 40 annuities. For once, it is a device which is encouraged by everyone. Only the New Popular Front affirms that it will return to 62 this summer and then to 60.

This long careers system is aimed at many people since out of 700,000 people who retire each year, 200,000 people leave earlier because they started working young. According to the National Old Age Insurance Fund, if we allow those who started their career before the age of 20 to leave after 40 years, we must add another 130,000 people.

Anyway, so many concessions have been made with the latest pension reform of Emmanuel Macron that there is today 40% of workers who benefit from a system that allows them to leave earlier, according to the Retirement Guidance Council.

Correcting a social injustice

The RN and the New Popular Front talk about justice for people who have worked in difficult jobs for a long time. The roofer over 60 years old in the heat on his roof since the age of 14 is an image of Epinal, a preconceived idea since when we look at the figures from INSEE and DRESS, the official statistical organizations, we find mainly qualified workers, intermediate professions, administrative staff.

The RN and the New Popular Front propose to correct a social injustice by reversing the reform. They explain in particular that this allows to avoid having people unemployed while waiting for retirement, but it is another preconceived idea. Jordan Bardella said that two thirds of the over 60s are unemployed, but that does not mean that they are unemployed. Many of them are simply retired and some are on sick leave. Most people over 60 do not come to Pôle Emploi while waiting for retirement.

Would going back on pension reform cost the State dearly?

According to the Retirement Guidance Council, we are already in the red. In 2070, the pension system will lose 14 billion euros. The population is aging: on average, a man remains retired for 26 years and a woman 28 years. Moreover, we have fewer children, so there are fewer contributors. In 2070, a third of the population will be over 65 years old. Today, in Europe, there are more residents over 65 than young people under 15.

Édouard Philippe’s party, Horizons, proposes as a solutiongo beyond 64 yearsthe European average is 65 years old. To avoid constantly falling behind, Horizons wants encourage employees to save throughout life to finance your retirement, not easy when you have trouble making it through the month.
